EIGHT THINGS

1. CR-North raced out to a 15-0 lead after 4 1/2 minutes. The Indians led 19-4 after one quarter and 31-21 at halftime. CR-North opened the second half with a 9-0 run to make it 40-21. Cheltenham got within six points, 52-46, with about three minutes left, but CR-North made enough foul shots at the end to hold on.

2. Indians sophomore 6-foot center Sarah Kiely had 14 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots. Freshman guard Devin Gold had 15 points and five assists, and sophomore forward Kelly Scull finished with 12 points and six rebounds in her first start. Senior Jen Sroba had nine points and seven rebounds.

3. Cheltenham beat CR-North, 68-54, in last spring's Class AAAA state championship game. Sroba was the only starter back from either team this year.

4. The Panthers (10-9) started three sophomores, a junior and a senior, and freshman point guard Tiffany Johnson played a lot and scored eight points. Junior forward Dayne McCrewell, who has recently returned following knee surgery, had 14 points. Sophomore guard Monet Constant scored 12 of her 14 points in the game's last six minutes.

5. CR-North faces Archbishop Wood in Sunday's Cougar Classic all the way in Cherry Hill, N.J., on Sunday.

6. Kiely is averaging a double-double: 13.3 points and 11.7 rebounds.

7. College note: CR-North graduate and Princeton University freshman Addie Micir was just named Ivy League Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week. Micir is averaging 7.5 points and 4.4 rebounds, had 22 points and six rebounds in a win over Penn on Jan. 12.

SIX THINGS

1. Tennent trailed by eight, 35-27, midway through the third quarter. A 19-0 run turned an eight-point deficit into an 11-point lead, 46-35.

2. Tennent hit one of 11 3-point attempts in the first half, then made four of four in the second half.

3. The Panthers scored 16 points in the first 3:49 of the fourth quarter, and finished with 25 points in the quarter. They shot 58.3 percent (14 for 24) in the second half.

4. Tennent (13-5 overall, 8-2 SOL Continental) is in a three-way tie for first place with CB East and CR-North. Norristown is one game back.

5. Junior guard Laura Kosma played extremely well for Tennent. She equaled her season high with 15 points and had five rebound and four assists. Sophomore Sarah Godfrey had 15 points and seven rebounds. Senior Lissa Tercha had 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocks.

6. Tennent has four SOL games left: Souderton, CB East, CB West and CR-North. If the Panthers win all four, they win the league.

7. TV note: Tomorrow, CR-North vs. Cheltenham is on CN8 at 1 p.m. Conestoga vs. Archbishop Carroll will also be televised at 2:30 p.m.

SEVEN THINGS

1. Conwell-Egan (12-4 overall, 4-1 Philadelphia Catholic League North) led the whole way and moved into a tie for second place in the division with Ryan (10-5, 4-1). The Ragdolls closed to within one point, 16-15, early in the third quarter, but CEC answered with a decisive 13-1 run.

2. Conwell-Egan junior guard Carmen Tyson-Thomas, already a two-time PCL North MVP, finished with 15 points, four assists and four steals. She has 1,355 career points and is closing in on the schools' (Bishop Egan, Bishop Conwell and Conwell-Egan) all-time career mark: Katie Kilker's 1,417 points.

3. Junior guard Megan Tole and senior forward Kim Hollawell had eight points apiece for Ryan, which has a great team Web site at www.geocities.com/bb_coach_f/.

4. Junior guard-forward Rachel Moore had nine points and four assists for Conwell-Egan, and senior guard Theresa Griffin added seven points. Moore and Griffin had important 3-pointers in the third quarter. Tyson-Thomas also banked in a 3-pointer at a crucial spot.

5. I never criticize individual officials. I know they work hard and try their best. But the level of officiating this season is by far the lowest I've seen in 11 seasons of covering girls basketball. It's not a looming crisis. It's a current crisis. Something needs to be done now to recruit and train talented young officials. The kids deserve quality officiating.

6. Conwell-Egan had not beaten Ryan since a wild 68-66 victory on Jan. 17, 2006. Ryan won the second game that season and swept three games in 2006-2007, including a 41-32 win in the PCL playoffs. If Archbishop Wood goes on to win the PCL North, as expected, Ryan and Conwell-Egan will likely meet again in the PCL quarterfinals.

7. College note: Ryan 2007 graduate Meghan Gibson is averaging 4.8 points and 4.1 rebounds as a freshman forward for unbeaten Holy Family University (13-0), which is ranked No. 11 in the country in NCAA Division II.
